Cricket: An unfair accusation

As the world’s top-ranked ODI team helplessly crashed out of the Champions Trophy, their media had a field day blaming archrivals Pakistan for their team’s ouster. It didn’t matter that Australia’s win against Pakistan came off the last ball despite having to chase a meager total, or that Misbah-ul-Haq nearly broke his back for the winning cause. Rana Naved’s 14-ball maiden spell didn’t impress the Indian supporters either.

While some channels blatantly accused Pakistan of deliberately losing the match against Australia to knock Dhoni’s men out, others chose a more discreet manner. Younis Khan came under the radar for fielding a ‘reserve side’.

One can understand the Indian fans’ resentment given their team only lost one match in the group stage, it is still not fair to out-rightly accuse Pakistan of throwing the match.

Aptly described by a Pakistani blogger, one may now expect our neighbours to blame Pakistani agents for Team India’s first-round exit. Phew.
