Sports in Brief: Stewart gains ground in Chase

Tony Stewart posted his fourth win of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, capturing the Price Chopper 400 yesterday at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.
The two-time series champion moved up one spot in the standings to fourth in the Chase for the Championship.

Mark Martin, the pole-sitter, finished seventh and maintained his lead in the standings. He is up by 18 points over three-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, who finished ninth.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel led from start to finish to win Formula One's Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.

Vettel finished ahead of Toyota's Jarno Trulli and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Tamika Catchings had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists as the Indiana Fever beat the Phoenix Mercury, 86-85, in the WNBA Finals in Indianapolis. Indiana leads the best-of-five series, two games to one, with Game 4 scheduled for Wednesday.

OLYMPICS: The cost of Chicago's defeat in its bid to host the 2016 Olympics will be felt in the value of the next U.S. broadcast deal. The International Olympic Committee's top negotiator, Richard Carrion, said the U.S. rights are worth less after the 2016 Games were awarded to Rio de Janeiro.

NBC paid $2.2 billion for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the 2012 London Games.

Olympic silver medalist Bridget Sloan has been selected for the team that will compete at this month's World Gymnastics Championships in London.

TENNIS: Nikolay Davydenko of Russia defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain, 6-4, 7-5, to win the Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur.

COLLEGES: Southern Miss quarterback Austin Davis will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left foot.

Texas Tech starting quarterback Taylor Potts was hospitalized at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after suffering a concussion during the Red Raiders' 48-28 victory over New Mexico. Potts was listed in good condition. Tech cornerback Nathan Stone was listed in stable but fair condition after suffering a neck injury.
