Home hope Aleksandra Wozniak won through to the third round of the Bell Challenge at the expense of Russia's Regina Kulikova in Quebec.
Canada's third seed waltzed through the first set 6-2 but was made to work a little harder before taking the second 7-5.
The other second-round winners were the Czech Republic's fourth seed Lucie Safarova - easing through in straight sets against Canada's Valerie Tetreault - American wild card Bethanie Mattek-Sands - 6-3 6-3 against her compatriot Vania King - and Lilia Osterloh, also from the USA, who beat her fellow qualifier Amra Sadikovic of Switzerland 6-3 2-6 6-2.
